Applications Update

The deadline to apply for Fall 2013 was December 3rd; late applications cannot be considered. All submitted applications are being processed during the month of December. Complete applications will be sent to the HSPA Program office in early January for review by mid-January. We cannot respond to inquiries regarding applications; please check for your status updates on the SOPHAS site. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Introducing our new Director

Ann Keller is an associate professor of health policy at the School of Public Health of the University of California, Berkeley.  Her major fields of research are public administration and organization theory, health policy and environmental health policy.  In all of her research, Keller pursues questions regarding the role of expertise in public decision making.  Keller holds a PhD in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.  Before coming to Berkeley, Keller was a member of the Political Science faculty at the University of Colorado, Boulder and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Robert Wood Johnson Scholars in Health Policy Research Program.

Keller’s publications have appeared in the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory; Public Administration Review; Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management; Risks, Hazards, and Crisis in Public Policy; and The Nonproliferation Review.  Keller’s book, Scientists in Environmental Policy: The Politics of Objective Advice, is published by the MIT Press and won the Don K. Price Award for the Best Book in Science and Technology Politics published in the last three years (Awarded by the Science, Technology, and Environmental Politics Section of the American Political Science Association, 2011).

and our new Program Manager

Ghada Haddad has been a program administrator for one of the MPH programs in the School of Public Health for several years.  She graduated from UC Berkeley in Political Science but began work with SPH while still a student.  Her deep commitment to students and well-organized approach to managing the Health and Social Behavior focus of the MPH program were just some of the reasons she is a wonderful fit for this position.  She has won awards of recognition from both the School of Public Health as well as campus: in 2010, she was named one of the recipients of the Chancellor’s Outstanding Staff Award.  Ghada brings professionalism, sincerity, and enthusiasm to the HSPA Program.

Health Services Research Colloquium

The Fall 2012 colloquium began September 4th with Professor Timothy Brown presenting “How Effective are California Public Health Departments at Preventing Mortality?” The fall schedule of speakers may be found here.
